You mean that the prompt appears on two lines, with "~$" on the second one? That's because you haven't typed the line of code on one line in .bashrc. If you hover the code in my blog post and click the "view source" button, it will show how it's supposed to be typed.

I like transmission more than deluge, so it might be worth trying to figure out how to use flexget and cron to work with that I imagine it will be mostly the same though.

Although it it already easy enough anyway just to go download the torrent file manually.

Good information nonetheless, thanks.

Yea, I have been using cosmic panda for about a month now. It's pretty sweet.

The only thing I miss is being able to shuffle though playlists and favorites.

I was having this same issue today, and it was on my brand new laptop I received yesterday. I had never noticed this issue before on any other computer ever in my life (i don't think?)...I thought it obviously was the computer. However I came across your post, and realized that I had Photoshop Elements 8 running, and VOILA, when I closed the program, everything worked!!!
Thank you!

This is my current layout for deadbeef. When the song changes of I change it by using the keyboard the OSD pops up and that has the album art in it.

It's lovely~

Navigate to /usr/share/xsessions/ and make a new file called xmonad-gnome.desktop. In it, type:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Gnome + XMonad
Comment=Gnome + XMonad tiling window manager
Exec=gnome-session --session=xmonad
Icon=xmonad.png
Type=XSession

You should have a file called ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs. Open it and change "main = xmonad [something...]" to "main = xmonad gnomeConfig".

The file that you created will add an entry to the login screen.

I'm not 100 % sure if this is all you have to do, but almost. I also had to struggle a bit with it to get it working. But here you may find more information: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_Gnome

How did you manage to keep the gnome-panel alive? I installed XMonad via the package manager, and it creates a nice selectable XMonad entry in the Session tab on the gdm login screen.
Then, once I log in with XMonad as session, the gnome panel is nowhere to be seen. I can run gnome-panel in xmonad, but it appears as 2 empty panels that are not ignored by xmonads window management =(
I guess some xmonad.hs voodoo is in order, but I know just enough haskell to hack my own keyboard shortcuts in xmonad.hs.
I'm at a loss, can you post your xmonad.hs?

Ohh, I spy an ubunchu folder.

And I tried using a few tiling WMs but I could never get used to it. I like to keep my windows all very specific sizes for one thing, and the way that the wm tries to make them use the whole screen kinda weirded me out.

Granted, I could see how it could have been a little useful on my old netbook when screen real estate was at a premium, but I ended up having one tile at a time anyway.

Maximumize works better, it's more flexible. Sadly, I haven't figured out a way to get functionality like that on gnome-shell but I will figure that out later.

No, I never got Arch working correctly, so I went and installed Linux Mint instead. It works fine without any hassle.
The only problem I have experienced is that I can't change the brightness if I wake the computer from sleep mode, however it works if I wake it up from hibernate. Pretty strange.
I could give you my laptop-mode-tools settings, but I never got them completely right. It used more power than Windows and it wasn't fun to mess with all files. In Mint the power usage haven't been a problem. On battery it uses ~7 watt.

Hi Dan,
I've got the same laptop and same distro over here.
Did you ever get suspend/resume/hibernate working right?
Also log out takes about 20 seconds if I activate it via the gnome3 menu and when shutting down.
And can you post your laptop-mode-tools settings.

Ta,
Jake.

Hmmm. Any hint ?

I have attached some images of the computer's backside. If you click on the thumbnails and then on "Original" you can see them in their full size.

As you can see on the images, it's possible to replace the hard drive and the RAM sticks. And you need a screwdriver with a really small head to open them.
I wonder why it's only those two covers that have those small screws, while all other seem to have more normal sized...

Yeah, I installed 2.6.39. But then was 3.0 released to the main repo so I installed it and that is what my Arch partition has now. I haven't experienced anything different with it.

About the backside of the laptop. There are 3 covers. All of them have cross-headed screws but 2 of them (one of them covers the RAM and the other I suppose covers the hard drive) require a really tiny screwdriver. The third I can open with a regular cross-headed screwdriver, and I'm pretty sure that there is a docking thing behind that cover. However, I couldn't find my fathers screwdrivers, so I will ask him when he gets home. I will tell u later (in ~3 hours) what are behind them. =)

To get the webcam working in Arch you have to add "uvcvideo" to MODULES.

And I remembered that I don't know how I'm supposed to connect to a wireless network in Arch. I don't think there is anything pre-installed that does it. And I don't have wireless at home so it's a bit hard to experiment with it.

I have also attached a photo to this comment of the error that I sometimes get when I try to shutdown the computer in Arch. (It just occured)

Besides the "accessibility" of the hard drive(wether there's a cover for the hdd/ram or I would need to disassemble the whole laptop), I think I don't need anything else.

And just wondering if you used the kernel 2.6.39 or already tried with the 3.0.

Again, thank you very much, this is very helpful :)

I actually installed Linux Mint on my laptop since I got a bit tired of all tweaking that was needed to get it working correctly. Nothing major, but many small things that didn't work as it was supposed to.

I installed Gnome 3 on the Arch installation and the audio worked, some FN keys worked (didn't try all, but I still have Arch on the hard drive so I will check later), I got the webcam working after adding something to the modules in the rc.conf file (will check later what I added), touchpad worked.

But yeah, many small things to tweak. Like the power saving tools (laptop-mode-tools) which I never got right. It seemed to consume more than the Windows install.
In some cases I got strange messages in the command-line that shows when the computer is shutting down, so I had to hold down the power button on the computer. Don't know how to fix this. :P
Get the webcam working (which I eventually did).

In Mint almost everything seems to work just as it's supposed to, so I guess it's only a matter of tweaking. But I'm not a Linux pro and I got a bit tired of sitting in front of the computer for a couple of days just getting stuff working.
The only thing I have stumbled over that doesn't work in neither Arch or Mint is getting the screen brightness buttons to work after waking the computer up from sleep. But it's possible to change the screen brightness in BIOS, so I think I will do that when I start school and don't have the computer plugged in to the wall. If I don't find a solution.

I will boot into Arch to check the FN keys, and I will check if it's possible to replace the RAM and hard drive. Please tell if you want me to check something more.

Hi. I use Arch too, and I'm thinking on purchasing this same laptop. Does all the other hardware works? (I mean, the "classics": audio (jacks), fn/multimedia keys, webcam, touchpad...)

thanks in advance ;)

Although the only time I found this to be an issue is when they switched from python2.x to python3 and couldn't build gnome shell for a time.

Arch sort of likes to be on the bleeding edge and whatnot. It does have a testing server though.

I'm glad that you also find Arch an awesome distro. :)

About the installation. It didn't found it that hard. But then I cheated a bit by first installing it a couple of times in VirtualBox with the help of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjTTl_9aUXc . ^^
The hardest part I think was the partitioning, because there were options with terms I had never seen before. :)

Actually I haven't, and I'm neither a KDE user. But I suppose comparing openSUSE with KDE on Arch is almost like comparing Linux Mint/Ubuntu with Gnome on Arch.

There isn't really a big difference when you have managed to set up your system. You have to take more steps on Arch since so little is pre-installed. Like a desktop environment of your choice, codecs, sound drivers and similar stuff. But there is so much info about this in the wiki, so it's in reality not that hard. It only takes a little more time.

The biggest difference I think is that Arch is a rolling distro. That has both advantages and disadvantages, so it really depends on what kind of user you are. If you can wait 6 months for the next stable release of the distro, or if you prefer to always have the latest and greatest stuff. On Arch Linux's website they even recommend you to not update your system if you currently really need it for something. It sounds a bit worse than it is, but there is always a risk that an update breaks your system. :)

Read more on their website, and see if it sounds like something that would fit you:

Yep. Arch is the best!

I used to do some distro hopping myself but that all stopped when I found arch.
I am the kind of person who just likes the computer a certain way, and when ever I had used A different distro I ended up having to change things in order to get things just the way I liked them. With arch I can put things just how I want them from the get-go.

The main thing that was prevented me from trying arch was the fact that it was a non graphical install into command line, but I too was pleasantly surprised to find the amazing documentation. And now, I have really settled in and I could not be happier.

It's perfection, almost.

When you are browsing an encrypted website will all data between you (the client) and the server be encrypted. Therefore can't somebody else on the network, the ISP, the government or similar see what data you are sending to each other; in this case what page on Wikipedia you are watching. All banks and serious Internet stores use SSL to send credit card information and login information encrypted. Services like Gmail and Facebook also use SSL for sending login information.

Maybe it's a bit pointless to browse Wikipedia encrypted. But since it's such a tiny performance loss to use SSL compared to unencrypted, I can't really see a reason to not use it. :)

Very bad idea! The 64bit flash is beta and unregular updated. If someone use the x64 version, security holes are included. So the better solution is, take the 32bit version and refresh nspluginwrapper. A newer version of nspluginwrapper can be found on http://nspluginwrapper.davidben.net/download/.

Many thanks!

As far as i know, your blog was the only place where there were any additional information about the Ergo Proxy-box whatsoever.

I'm happy you put this up, cause I'm in the process of making up my mind about wether i will go for the swedish or the english box. Now, there isn't, to my knowledge at least, not much info about the swedish version either, but I think that it at least comes with each dvd-disch in separate boxes. But I'm not sure.

The only reason I would get this one would be because of the language. I think I rather have the english subtitles then the swedish ones.

So I will have to make up my mind.

Thanks again for the info, it was really helpful.
